An electric exterior Designing the first purely electric Porsche opened up exciting new opportunities. The Taycan is a four-door sports car that inherits the unmistakable Porsche design DNA, but also signals the start of a new era, made possible by the unique properties of electric vehicles. The removal of the internal combustion engine and exhaust tract, for instance, and replacement with a low-fitted battery and two separate electric drives, freed designers to create a flatter, broader form with a striking sports car look. The low installation of the electric motor on the front axle meant that the front edge of the bonnet could be lowered to emphasise the muscular wings of the Taycan. Electric vehicles demand efficient approaches, and aerodynamic design contributes to this. Having the chance to design the shell without the constraints of internal combustion meant that every component could be optimised, and so the Taycan delivers the lowest drag value of all current Porsches — and competitors. A fully galvanised steel-aluminium hybrid bodyshell reduces weight, while specially designed wheels improve aerodynamics even further.
